October 15, 2026 10 Minute Read
Overview
Budget hotels have continued to evolve, demonstrating continued resilience within the UK hospitality sector. Our new research, based on a survey of more than 2,000 UK consumers, highlights sustained demand for value-led accommodation, a consistent core product aligned with consumer priorities, growing interest in pod hotel formats, and a business model well-positioned to navigate rising operating costs.
The report explores the demand drivers supporting the sector, the factors shaping consumer booking decisions, emerging operational and development opportunities, and the implications for investors and operators.

Five themes shaping the UK budget hotel sector
-
Robust demand continues to support the sector
Consumer appetite for budget accommodation remains strong. Nearly two-thirds (61%) of respondents say they choose a budget hotel for short trips always or most of the time, while 64% are likely to choose a budget hotel for future short breaks. The sector is supported by value-seeking consumer behaviour, a resilient domestic travel market, and continued growth in UK tourism demand.
-
A standardised value proposition with broad appeal
The survey highlights remarkable consistency in what travellers value most. Price, cleanliness, and location are the leading factors influencing hotel choice, reinforcing the importance of delivering a reliable core product rather than expanding amenity offerings. For operators and investors, this supports the case for scalable, standardised models that appeal to a broad range of leisure and business travellers.
-
Strong consumer appetite for emerging formats
Pod and capsule hotels remain a relatively small part of the UK market, yet consumer interest is already significant. More than half of respondents (52%) say they would consider staying in a pod or capsule hotel, with affordability the primary driver of appeal. As operators look to maximise space efficiency and improve development economics, these formats are emerging as a compelling growth opportunity.
-
Growth opportunities are expanding
The sector continues to create opportunities through asset conversion, consolidation, and technology adoption. Budget hotel operators are increasingly repurposing redundant commercial real estate, while advances in automation and AI are helping improve operational efficiency and customer experience. Together, these trends are creating further opportunities across the sector.
-
A defensive operational model
Rising labour, utility, and development costs continue to challenge the wider hospitality industry. However, limited-service operating models, efficient room formats, and increasing automation help budget hotels control costs and protect profitability. These structural advantages position the sector as a relatively defensive proposition through changing market conditions.
