The challenges faced by education estates
Higher education is undergoing rapid change. AI and emerging technologies are reshaping learning models and raising expectations, with students increasingly viewing universities through a customer lens.
As a result, campus excellence is no longer defined by compliance or buildings alone, but by the ability to deliver vibrant, well‑maintained spaces, seamless experiences for students and staff and the flexibility to adapt to change - while maximising value for every pound spent.

Case Study: Northumbria University at Newcastle: Providing student scholarships
UNN’s students come from some of the most under-represented groups in higher education. Inspired by the university’s inclusive approach, we’ve committed to providing funding for two postgraduate students on real estate-related masters programmes.
These scholarships help students to meet their living costs – and they complement the undergraduate scholarships we provide.
Helping to promote DEI in education is an important aspect of our partnership with the university – and we’re thoroughly vested in the success of the institution and its students.
Case Study: University of Westminster: Reducing costs and boosting student satisfaction
Problems with water temperature in some of the University of Westminster’s student accommodation resulted in high levels of call-outs and complaints.
We installed sensors that detect drops in water temperature before they become a problem for students in halls of residence.
This shift to predictive maintenance has resulted in a significant reduction in costly call-outs. It has also provided total visibility of assets and the maintenance they require.
Case Study: Sheffield Hallam University: Creating a vibrant, multi-purpose space satisfaction
Sheffield Hallam’s atrium has been at the heart of the university for 30 years. But a need to encourage people back to the campus, and ongoing maintenance issues, meant there was a need to refurbish.
In partnership with the university, we’ve created a modern, prestige space that brings the outdoors in. There are private areas for quiet conversation, coffee bars and meeting spaces – all nestled in between planted sections.
The project has re-invigorated the area. It’s used by students, faculty and the community – and creates revenue for the university as a venue for hire. It was also highly commended in the University Impact Initiative Awards – a first for a project driven by facilities management.
