Jessica Austen“I attended the Pathways to Property Summer School at the University of Reading and before this I could not tell you what a surveyor even was. It opened up my mind to the property industry and from there I did 1 weeks work experience at CBRE in the residential department. I applied for the apprenticeship scheme as well as applying to the Uni of Reading to study Real Estate and I ended up having the option of both! The rest is history…

“I am currently in the Advisory and Transaction department for occupiers. In my team we focus on finding office space for our occupier clients as well as advising them on rent reviews, lease renewals and stay vs go analytics.

“The property industry is a very social industry and it seems like there is always an event to attend. The networking aspect of the job keeps it stimulating and a time to enjoy yourself with work. It’s not a 9-5 office job and no day is the same! One day I could be out on viewings with clients, attending building launches in Central London or attending client meetings. Another trying to catch some valuable desk time! Gaining work experience is a great way to get a feel for the job and the industry. The property industry is also all about networking and meeting as many people as you can, it’s not necessarily what you know all the time but who you know! Work hard to make contacts who won’t forget you.”
