About the Client
Our client is an American business operating across the world, whose core business lies in financial information and analytics. Environmental sustainability forms an essential part of their corporate responsibility strategy.
CBRE provides real estate and energy and sustainability services across a substantial portion of their global portfolio; this includes the gathering of environmental utility data, such as energy and water consumption.
The Challenge
It was crucial for our client to understand how their current sustainability programme compared to their peers’, and where competitors were performing better; the challenge was that they had only a partial understanding of what competitors were doing. They also wanted to understand any gaps or oversights in their environmental data collection and reporting processes so they could reduce inefficiency and risk. Additionally, they wanted an independent assessment of their current programme to ensure it matched industry standards and stakeholder expectations.
Solution & Outcome
To support our client, CBRE engaged a multitude of people across the client’s operations, globally, to understand their current reporting practices. Drawing from this, we benchmarked their sustainability programme and outputs against four key competitors on 30 sustainability aspects. We reviewed where competitors were outperforming our client, and provided recommendations on how they could improve to ensure that they become best-in-class with regards to environmental sustainability. As the final step, we are developing a roadmap outlining how the client should implement these recommendations, and what the approximate costs and benefits will be.
Result
We have identified several opportunities for our client to improve their environmental data reporting processes and to remove inefficiencies. Additionally, we have provided recommendations to improve the disclosure of their environmental performance to external stakeholders such as investors, and enhance their brand value.
